Richard Allen "Dick" Fisher, Sr., 82, of New Albany, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on April 24, 2025, in New Albany.
Born on January 2, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio, Dick dedicated his life to public service and community involvement. His career spanned decades and reflected a deep commitment to the safety and well-being of others. Starting as a volunteer firefighter with the Clinton Township Fire Department in the 1960s, he rose through the ranks—becoming a full-time firefighter in 1968, Acting Lieutenant in 1970, Assistant Fire Chief in 1972, and ultimately serving as Fire Chief starting in 1981. In 1990, he took on the role of Chief of the Bureau of Fire Safety and Code Enforcement before retiring from the department in 1993.
Alongside his fire service career, Dick served as an auxiliary police officer at Blendon Township, then as a part-time police officer with the Clinton Township Police Department from 1970 until 1998. His dedication to law enforcement extended further when he served as an auxiliary deputy sheriff for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department between 1988 and 1990.
Dick’s commitment to his community continued through his work with New Albany-Plain Local Schools as the campus coordinator of safety and security. He also served as a Plain Township Trustee from 1988 to 1992 and as New Albany Village Councilman from 1997 to 2002, contributing to local governance with the same passion he brought to all aspects of his life.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dick found joy in horseback riding and showing horses—a pastime that brought him great satisfaction over the years. A devoted football fan, he enjoyed following games and sharing that enthusiasm with those around him. He was also an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police Associate organization.
Faith played an important role throughout Dick’s life. He was a member of Franklin Church in New Albany, where he found fellowship and spiritual support.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Mary Jane (Thompson) Fisher; son, Richard Fisher II; daughter, Joy Fisher; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Mildred (Calvert) Fisher; brothers Thomas, Donald, William, and Charles Fisher; sister Barbara Winkler.
Dick’s legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort and peace to those whose lives he touched.
